Organic: Worth the Price

Although coffee tastes great, like any other crop, its cultivation can have a serious impact on the environment. A great way to limit the environmental impact of the coffee you drink, and the amount of chemicals you intake, is by opting for organic coffee. Organically grown products are grown without the use of harmful fertilizers and pesticides, and are cultivated in a sustainable manner.

By purchasing organic products, you are supporting the farmers who choose to employ “green methods” in their cultivation and reduce the amount of pollution that is caused by irrigation and harvesting. Organic crops also promote sustainability of the soil and water supplies where they are grown, as well as preserving the surrounding wildlife. Organic products may cost a little more, but the extra price is worth it.

Organic coffee is coffee that is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. An organic production system will replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture.

To be certified and sold in the United States as organic coffee, it must meet a few requirements:
the coffee must be certified by a U.S. Department of Agriculture accredited agency, farmed for three years without the use of synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances, and maintain a sustainable crop rotation plan to prevent erosion, the depletion of spoil nutrients, and to control for pests.

Coffee Can Reduce Health Risks

For far too long, coffee has gotten a bad rap from making people jittery to increasing heart problems.  This, however, isn’t really the case.  Scientists have found that organic coffee taken in moderation can actually reduce a person’s chances of Alzheimer’s disease, kidney stones, gallstones and depression.

The key is to drink responsibly.  You don’t always need to have a latte in your hand, but one cup in the morning and another in evening may actually save your life.

Dump that Corporate Coffee Giant

May 1, 2008 Author: MrBean

organic coffeeThe popularity of people going to a certain Seattle-based coffee conglomerate is so engrained into the American psyche that an informal poll taken by Yahoo had people reporting their monthly spending at the coffee giant at anywhere between $150-$300.

Unfortunately, said company also seldom uses organic coffee or fair trade beans.  In fact, earlier this year, they pulled using organic milk due to low sales, but the few organic and fair trade items they offer aren’t promoted.

The best solution is to stop frequenting this place and make your own coffee.  Not only will you save yourself a ton of money, but you’ll also be drinking something that isn’t enhanced with chemicals.
